School Nurse

The nurse conducts vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening and advises parents regarding results. She assesses development histories and medical records, keeps health records up-to-date and records new information when appropriate.

The nurse provides assessment and management of minor illnesses and accidents, administers first-aid and refers for treatment to a physician when necessary. She records the type and dosage of medication a student may require and provides training for teachers regarding the distribution of medication. She provides workshops and classes for students regarding CPR, maturation, and substance abuse, and counsels parents on preventive and remedial measures.

The nurse must hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing; current license as a professional nurse in Connecticut; three years full-time experience in public health and/or school nursing or a combined agency; knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of public health and school nursing.
