Admissions During Social Distancing

During this time of state-mandated social distancing, Villa Maria School remains committed to helping students and families gain access to our amazing teachers and program by means of an adjusted but equally thoughtful admissions process. In many ways, the process remains the same in that we help families move through the four stages of the admissions process as listed under Admissions Process (link to this drop-down box please). However, several steps have been amended to foster communication between the applicant and the school.

During the Coronavirus shut-down of our physical campus, Villa Maria School will be amending the admissions process to include the following:

  • we are moving our initial campus tours to a live video-tour. Using Facetime or Zoom we walk the campus and explore the facilities while simultaneously chatting with you about your child and their learning profile. This format empowers both the applicant as well as our school to enjoy a personal and interactive conversation while ensuring both parties adhere to social distancing guidelines.
  • we are moving our student interviews and tours to a live video conference. Again, using Facetime or Zoom, we are able to chat with applicants and spend some time interacting with them. In order to make this process as easy as possible, we send parents guidelines ahead of time to ensure that both the parents and the student applicant know what is expected during the video conference, how long to expect to spend on the video conference, and how to make the best of their time during the video conference.
  • we are foregoing shadow visits for the time being and replacing them with video conferencing with instructional faculty and staff. Instead of hosting these visits, we will lean on alternate avenues to learn more about the student and his/her learning profile, including but not limited to: receiving a release from the parents to speak with the child’s current teachers, tutor, or service-provider; requesting additional written teacher recommendations and/or report cards, and booking a special video conference between the applicant and a current Villa Maria teacher or service-provider.
  • Throughout the admissions process our commitment remains the same as always: to ensure that a personal connection is fostered and that we as a school do all we can to explore the potential fit between the child’s learning profile and our school’s resources, staffing, and mission. This means that our Admissions team of dedicated teachers, service-providers, and administrators will still participate in the applicant review process and vet candidates with care and intention to make sure that there is a strong fit between the candidate and our program.

Within a few days, the administration quickly trained the teachers and helped them establish their curriculum on-line. The teacher team sent us a complete weekly schedule of our daughter’s on-line classes – with each Zoom link right in each block of time. It was easy for our daughter (and us) to access each different class, each hour. The teachers are continuing to do an amazing job “connecting” and challenging our daughter. It appears that she is learning as well as she would have if she was working in the classroom.
