“Healthy Perspectives – Flashbacks”
November 11, 2008 - Story by Barry Halpin, Stamford Advocate
I'm at Villa Maria School, a private co-educational day school serving students with learning disabilities—or as Headmaster Sister Carol Ann likes to say, bright kids who learn differently—performing with Hilton School Players: Amy, Drew, Parke, Adam and Allie. They do slice-of-life scenes on peer pressure, parent-child and boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, as well as some comedy improv.
The Peer players are about kids helping kids; the actors are funny, speak to the truth of the situations, and teach valuable lessons about peer pressure to the Villa Maria students, who have an opportunity to perform with them. Una, an eighth-grader, tells me, "When you invited us on stage to participate, it really helped us understand how we should act if we are in those situations."
At the end of the performance, The Peer Players share their take on peer pressure and answer questions from the audience. Michala, an eigth-grader, tells me, "I think it is very important to send a message to young teens about the importance of drug and alcohol awareness."
