Technology is an integral part of the education process at Villa Maria, and the school has made an extensive investment in appropriate technology for its students.
There are three networked writing labs, a computer lab, many computers in individual classrooms and in all of the ninth-grade classrooms. In the library, five networked, on-line computers are available for use by students. Students have weekly classes in software applications and keyboarding skills. Computer programs available for student use include Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Kidspiration, Inspiration, Solo, and a variety of touch typing programs. Teachers enjoy professional development instruction through the state Education Department, involving use of new programs as they are acquired.
The school has an Academic Technology Plan included in its Five Year Strategic Plan. It was developed with input from teachers, administrators, and the computer technology specialist. Villa Maria has computerized programs for cataloging library books and textbooks and a custom school information system uniquely tailored to the school’s needs.
Use of the Internet is carefully monitored. Today students eagerly investigate educational sites for research and for learning. Villa Maria has an “Acceptable Use” policy, which students and families are required to review and then sign the “Student Network and Internet Agreement” before students are allowed to use the Internet in school. Villa Maria also provides information to students and families regarding appropriate and ethical use of technology.
